Senior year is a big deal. Your photos should feel like you, not like you’re wearing someone else’s style for a day.

If you’re feeling a little nervous about what to wear, that’s completely normal. Most seniors do. The good news is you don’t need a perfect outfit. You just need the right one for you.

Start here: be yourself

As a Spokane senior photographer, I know dressing yourself is already hard enough without a camera involved. So let’s simplify it.

The most important tip I can give you is thisComfort is everything

If you’re deciding between a trendy outfit you’re unsure about and something you already love wearing, go with what feels like home. The way your outfit moves, fits, and feels will show up in your photos.

This doesn’t mean you have to keep it casual. You can absolutely dress things up. Just make sure it still feels natural to you. That’s what creates photos that feel effortless and timeless.

Styling tips for senior sessions

Think of your outfit as the foundation. Everything else builds from there.

Start with your outfit firstPick something you genuinely love, then build around it. If you’re bringing multiple outfits, aim for a mix of casual and slightly more dressed up.

Move in it before your sessionSit, walk, spin, lean. If something feels awkward now, it’ll feel even more awkward during your session.

Choose movement-friendly piecesMidi and maxi dresses are always a favorite. They photograph beautifully and give you that soft movement that brings photos to life.

Think about your locationMany of my senior sessions around Spokane and Coeur d'Alene include nature spots, trails, or water. Heels can be tricky in those environments, so bring a backup pair just in case.

Dressing for your body and confidence

Everyone has areas they’re more aware of. That’s completely normal.

The goal is not to hide yourself. It’s to feel confident.

Sleeves are your friendThree-quarter sleeves tend to photograph really well and offer a flattering shape.

Be mindful with strapless piecesIf you’re constantly adjusting it, it’ll show. Choose something you can move freely in without thinking about it.

Keep accessories simple but intentionalA pair of earrings or a statement hat can elevate your look without taking over the photo.

Hair and makeup that photographs beautifully

If you’re considering professional hair and makeup, I’m all for it.

It takes the pressure off you and helps everything translate better on camera. Natural light can wash things out slightly, so a professional knows how to balance that.

If you’re doing your own, that works tooJust keep a few things in mind

Apply slightly more than you would day-to-dayAnd if you’re open to it, false lashes make a big difference in photos. They help your eyes stand out without looking overdone.

If you’re looking for local artists in the Spokane and North Idaho area, I’m always happy to share recommendations.

Choosing colors that work with your location

Color plays a bigger role than most people expect.

You have two solid optionsBlend with your environment or stand out from it

If you remember the color wheel from art class, this is where it comes in handy.

A few things to avoid before your session

Try to limit sun exposure leading up to your shootSunburns and tan lines are tough to edit and can add additional editing fees

Think about tan lines from accessoriesIf you usually wear a watch or hair tie on your wrist, it’s worth considering ahead of time

Water sessions (yes, they’re as fun as they sound)

A lot of my senior sessions end near water, especially during summer in the Spokane and Coeur d’Alene area.

If you’re open to it, bring a towel and plan to get a little wet. Some of the best, most natural moments happen at the very end when you’re relaxed and just having fun.

Final thoughts

You don’t need a perfect outfit to have amazing senior photos.

You just need to feel like yourself.

That’s what creates images that feel confident, natural, and completely true to who you are in this season.

If you’re looking for a senior photographer in Spokane or North Idaho who will guide you through every step, from styling to location to posing, I’d love to work with you.
